81-83 xv750 diagram (SOLVED)81-83 xv750 diagram (SOLVED)IGNITION
going at a different approach for a bare bones diagram. this is just a follow along. no commits needed..... this is a factory diagram.. this is the same diagram that i made blank and left the loads there.. when i get time. i am going to do a section at a time. i will start with the ignition and r/r first. everybody wants bare bones but all want different things.. such as no tach with all the lights. or no lights and no tach. tach and lights. no kill switch. kill switch,no lights and with tach. etc, ect, etc.. what i am going to do is do every combo that i can think of. there should be no questions when this thread is done. if this one works out. then i will do other models and sizes. added the battery 12 gauge wires. positive i have start at the 20 amp fuse. from the fuse to the ignition switch and r/r. negative i start from the battery negative connector to the r/r. now the ignition switch has battery power along with the r/r. now the fuses are connected from the ignition switch. blue and brown from the switch is hot when the key is turned on. these 2 wires feed the fuses making the brown, red/white, blue, red/yellow hot when the key is on.. the brown has a factory splice between the ignition switch and fuse box connector. this connection is for the r/r..... we now have 4 wires at the fuse box ready to be used. blue, red/white, brown, red/yellow. the red/yellow feeds the headlight. this will not be used any more. this leaves a wire to use for a ipod or phone. this is the red/white power supply from the ignition fuse to the kill switch to both coils to the TCI finally to the starter solenoid. this is the same but no kill switch. so the red/white starts at the fuse marked ignition then to both coils then the TCI finally to the starter solenoid. ran a ground for the TCI ran the orange and gray wires from the TCI to each coil. ran the blue/white wire to the solenoid.. the ignition system is done. this diagram is with the kill switch. if not using the kill switch nothing changes just bypass the kill switch like i showed in the diagram.............dan You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramLIGHTS/LOADS
decided to use the blank diagram. i am first starting with the brown power wire from the fuse box. starts at the fuse to the horns. if not using horns then do not run the brown wire to them. then to the neutral light. if not using a neutral light just do not hook it up. same as the tach. if no tach then do not run the brown wire to it. this brown wire also feeds the 2 brake switches and the turn signal FLASHER (not a relay like in the diagram) the flasher is a 2 prong car flasher. if you do not want signals then do not run the brown to the flasher. added the brake switch signal wires to the rear light and a ground we now have a brake light.. ran the brown/white from the flasher to the turn signal switch. if not using turn signals then do not worry about this wire......dan You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramsignal light wires are run. if not using indicators in the cluster then do not run the wires to them..
next i added a toggle switch for the headlight. parking light, meter lights and headlight will not come on until the toggle is flipped on... the grounds and horns hooked up. and last the neutral switch wire. added the tach with the lights due to the brown wire that feeds it is also the wire that feeds the brake switches, neutral, horns and flasher. also the ground is part of the headlight ground. again if no tach then do not run the brown and the orange wires...........dan You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramDamn this is a good write up. I'm not quite ready yet to be hitting the electrics, but i reckon in a couple of months time - this will be an invaluable resource. Thanks TRV.

after all you are losing 9 connectors and 34 wires just for the ignition side of the harness..........dan 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramhaha yea I'm not complaining! I just wanted to make sure there was nothing else I had to remove. And would you just recommend pulling off the whole harness and digging into it that way or would that just lead me to complications?

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramif you run the blue/black to the dimmer switch the headlight will be on as soon as you turn the key on and while cranking on the starter. this is hard on the battery and starter. this is why i installed a toggle switch. the toggle switch will not allow power into the dimmer switch until you select the toggle to do so........
another way around this.. and this is what i have. a 2 turn ignition switch. turn the key 1 time and the ignition is hot. once the engine is running. turn the switch again and all the loads are powered up (lights).........dan 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramAh yes...good point about the starting. I will probably try & find a 2pos ignition.
Cheers for the help. Goody ![]()
Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramJust had a thought.
If i'm changing the ignition I wonder if it's worth going for an auto motive type with a sprung ignition/starter & do away with the handlebar button ? Might be a pita if I stall it at the lights or such like, but would mean I can use a trick throttle assy. Goody. ![]()
Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramyes i have wired in car ignition switches.
just run the blue/white wire going to the solenoid to ground. run the red/white to the solenoid to the center ignition post. when you turn the key to the crank position. the switch will send 12v to the already grounded solenoid. this will engage the starter only..........dan 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramcool, i read somewhere if you make a list of what you want you may have a diagram already made? is that true? i wanting just what needs to run plus one horn, headlight, tailight, and turnsignals..... the less wires and relays the better lol
also i havent read into it much but seen mention groundng... these bikes have grounding issues?
![]() Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramyes major grounding problems.
factory has everything tied into the r/r 12 gauge ground wire to the battery cable. i have just the r/r grounded to the battery cable. the headlight, TCI, horns, tach and signals go to there own ground. if you want different things to use. make a thread and i will help you. to load this thread with what you want will probably take it over 100 posts....... sky is the limit to mods that can be done. nice thing about the 1st gen. no relays at all needed. but you will have to get a toggle switch or a 2 turn ignition. for the headlight. also a 2 prong car flasher for the signals to work...........dan 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

and which diagram had the push button start wired in?
![]() Re: 81-83 xv750 diagramwhite/green does not get used. it goes to the diode. the diode is no longer being used so no need for the white/green..
the blue/white was added in the last pic under IGNITION. if you go to the LIGHTS AND LOADS you went to far........dan 82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)
