Turbodog side project: Spare parts bike (was cafe racer) II

PostAuthor: turbodog » Mon Feb 15, 2010 9:35 am

Mostly working thru electrical now. There are a lot of small differences between a 81 and a 83 (which, given the lack of cycom, etc is pretty similar to the 81 in terms of function). I am mixing and matching handlebar switches, etc to come up with the best set. Unfortunately, the connectors aren't always cross-compatible.

There is one connector at the rear of the harness which has me stumped. I cannot seem to find it on the '83 schematic. Three wires, apparently red/white, brown and black. The connector is sort of flat spade type, 4-position (1 empty)

Any suggestions welcome.

Spent way too much time carefully trimming my ebay cafe fairing to clear the tach/speedo nacelles.

That's about it. A foot of snow (I know what you're thinking.. in Crocodile Dundee voice: "That's not snow... THIS is snow!), Valentines day, dog bath due... lots of, ahem, distractions.

OK, well, just because I switched to a "quick and dirty" side project does not mean sh..., er, I mean LIFE doesn't keep happening. But, none of the distractions were particularly bad, and I finally have something to ride .....assuming it passes inspection this weekend, and if it needs a clutch (which i suspect) I can get 'er done on Saturday.

OK, so a few pics.

Yes, exactly. One reason I switched to this tail is it allows the battery to sit upright. So I can use a conventional battery, save $50.

It looks pretty cool!! Definitely different from the 83 920 you started with. And it looks like you kind of went back to more of a "cafe" tail. Very Nice.

I hope this isn't the one you want to convert to chain drive. That sounds like too much work.

Yah, the wiring to the tail light and rear signals is per my own personal color code.... or lack thereof. The recipe for this build was to use what I had on hand, and that included wire.

Thanx for the positive comments, guys. The tail turned out to be easier than trying to make the shortened seca seat merge into the seca tail. It was gonna require compound curves, and I just didn't want to mess with that. This tail was a matter of bandsaw the shape, bend it and paint it.

Yes, I WAS thinking of converting this to chain drive. I was not sure of the engine health (still am not completely). If it turns out to need major work, swapping in my spare XV-R engine might be the quickest solution. Engine, lower frame extension, swingarm, rear wheel/brake, done.

I'm pretty sure it will need a clutch. In 1st gear, clutch pulled in I can turn the rear wheel, but only with a lot of effort. Seems similar to problems others have had with XV's that sat for a long time. I'll start the engine tonite or tomorrow, then I'll know for sure.

Ah, It makes more sense now, If the engine is bad and you have the chain drive spares. You'd also end up with something extremely unique!

Got her running this evening. Everything seems OK, even the clutch. Float valve is stuck (I checked it by blowing in the inlet fitting and moving the float, but obviously it's not OK, based on the leakage).

Rear header was not tight, so immediately destroyed the exhaust gasket. Other than that, a very successful 'smoke test'. So, no chain conversion needed.

Put about 100 miles on her this weekend. Small oil leak from the front exhaust rocker arm cover. Had some spares I was polishing up, so put them on. Hope that fixes the leak. Put on a throttle lock, the ol' carpal tunnel makes it a necessity. Other than that, stick a fork in 'er, she's done.

Took her to THE biker bar in Dallas (Strokers) Saturday afternoon (drinkin iced tea, 5 years off from riding, y'know). Surrounded by custom HDs (I'm talkin' major hardware), she looked a little forlorn. Hope the bikes on either side of 'er weren't too rude. Met up with some folks and had a good time, bike ran flawlessly.

Looking good, in the new sig pic. All you have to do is tell the HD guys that you built it in a few weeks, with spare parts, in your garage and they ought to be impressed. Or find out what their monthly payment is and compare it to what you have into it total! :jaw:
