1983 XV920 Gas Mileage

PostAuthor: bhavlo » Thu Sep 16, 2010 12:23 pm

I have a 1983 Virago XV920 that I bought in parts last year. I was able to get it all back together, got it running using the instruction I found on here. It has been starting and running really well for 2 riding seasons now. The only thing that bothers me is that I get a consistent 30 MPG. I ride is mostly to and from work, about 4 miles each way, and hardly ever on long rides but I get 30 MPG no matter what.

I'm not sure what I should be getting, but I thought I would get more like 45 MPG so I am wondering if there anyone could tell me. If I should be getting better I want to figure out why and fix it, so your thoughts would be appreciated.

Ya know, I gotta tell you, mine is about the same story. All the way around. I havent gotten in to it yet to find out why, and I havent tried calculating the actual mileage, I just know its not very good.. Im running rich cause Im at 6500 feet. But I dont think even that would do it.. Also, I love to twist the throttle. Well.. In a bit, I should have some time to look into it, but for now, Ill be reading your results here.

If it runs good I don't question it but around 70miles out I start looking for gas, so not to hit res.

I've been fairly lucky. When first fired up after her long slumber she was getting about 35mpg.
New plugs, cleaned airfilter, a second oil change and good tire pressure as well as just plain dumb luck and it is running 41-42 mpg .

I start looking for gas stations at about 125kms or 75 miles . I've never felt that the 920 got very good milage . 75 miles at 3.8 U.S gallons , like 19mpg I think

I filled up and went 90 miles,, took 2.1 gallons, so, Im near to 45 MPG which surprised me. On Mountain Roads and not being tight about the fun twisting of the throttle AND 2 up with a girl who is 100lbs soaking wet..Me, Im about 190. So, I was shocked.

Has any one thought about changing the front gear ratio? My mechanic said you have to get a Euro type Virgo gears and I was wondering where I can get those?
